Ein Manual ist eine Anleitung, die den Betrieb und die Inbetriebnahme eines Gegenstandes beschreibt. Welche sind die Handbücher und Betriebsanleitungen für unser alltägliches gesellschaftliches Zusammenleben?

Daily Manual ist eine Veranstaltungsreihe des Kunstverein Bielefeld und bezieht sich auf das Art/Life Institute Handbook der Künstlerin Linda Montano von 1988, in dem sie Performances als alltägliche Übungen formuliert und gebündelt hat. Montano widmete sich bereits in den 1970er-Jahren dem Verhältnis von Performance und Care-Arbeit und daraus resultierenden Modi des Miteinanders. Ausgehend von ihrer Überzeugung, dass – in Fürsorge zu sich selbst stehend– bedeutet die eigene Lebensführung als künstlerischen Akt zu begreifen, schuf sie mit ihrem Handbuch eine Struktur performativer Handlungsanweisungen, die die Verschränkung von Kunst und Leben in Form alltäglicher Übungen für ein breites Publikum zugänglich machen sollte.

Der Kunstverein Bielefeld hat in Anlehnung an die performativen Übungen von Linda Montano ein kuratorisches Format entwickelt, das nach heutigen Entwürfen und Verhältnismäßigkeiten des (Zusammen)-Lebens fragt. Von August bis Anfang Oktober 2024 finden rund um den Kunstverein sowie in den Bielefelder Stadtraum greifend künstlerische Interventionen, Performances, Screenings und Konzerte statt, die sich der Befragung des Verhältnisses von Privatheit und Öffentlichkeit, Freizeit und Arbeit und unserem Zusammenleben allgemein widmen.

Daily Manual is a series of events organized by the Kunstverein Bielefeld, based on the Art/Life Institute Handbook by artist Linda Montano from 1988, in which she formulated and compiled performances as daily exercises. As early as the 1970s, Montano dedicated herself to the relationship between performance and care work, and the resulting modes of togetherness. Starting from her conviction that – standing in self-care – means understanding one's own way of life as an artistic act, she created with her handbook a structure of performative instructions that aimed to make the intertwining of art and life accessible to a broad audience in the form of daily exercises.

The Kunstverein Bielefeld has developed a curatorial format inspired by Linda Montano's performative exercises, which questions today's designs and proportions of (co-)living. From August to early October 2024, artistic interventions, performances, screenings, and concerts will take place around the Kunstverein and extend into the urban space of Bielefeld. These events will address the relationship between privacy and public life, leisure and work, and our coexistence in general.
